Opening Buzzers: General Motors Company, Sunedison Inc, Nokia Corporation, Arena Pharmaceuticals

Five General Motors factories in three states will soon share in a $1.3 billion investment so they can make higher-quality pickup trucks and new fuel-efficient engines and transmissions. Beginning in 2016, GM will compete in Europe’s volume markets under its respected Opel and Vauxhall brands. The company’s Chevrolet brand will no longer have a mainstream presence in Western and Eastern Europe, largely due to a challenging business model and the difficult economic situation in Europe.

Sunedison Inc (NYSE:SUNE) shares jumped 3.75% to $11.89. The company on Dec. 13 announced the pricing of its offering of $500 million aggregate principal amount of 2.00% convertible senior notes due 2018 and $500 million aggregate principal amount of 2.75% convertible senior notes due 2021 in a private placement.  The offering was upsized from the previously announced $400 million aggregate principal amount of 2018 notes and $400 million aggregate principal amount of 2021 notes. The offering is expected to close on December 20, 2013, subject to customary closing conditions. The Company has also granted the initial purchasers a 30-day option to purchase an additional $100 million aggregate principal amount of each series of notes on the same terms and conditions.

Nokia Corporation (ADR)(NYSE:NOK) shares fell 0.67% to $7.42 in the pre-market hour. The European Union on Dec. 4 said it has approved Microsoft Corp.’s $7.3 billion plan to acquire Nokia Corp.’s mobile phone business. The European Commission, the body’s executive arm, said it has “concluded that the transaction would not raise any competition concerns,” noting that “there are only modest overlaps between the parties’ activities and the links between Microsoft’s mobile operating systems, mobile applications and enterprise mail server software with Nokia’s smart mobile devices are unlikely to lead to competitors being shut out from the market.”

Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:ARNA) stock climbed 1.80% to $5.66 in the last trading session. Eisai Inc. and Arena Pharmaceuticals on Nov. 18 announced that a new data analysis from the BELVIQ(R) (lorcaserin HCl) Phase 3 clinical trial program will be presented at the American Heart Association 2013 Scientific Sessions, November 16-20 in Dallas, Texas.
