QSolar Commences Certification Process in United States for Its Proprietary QSS 250W
Calgary, Alberta CANADA, December 17, 2013 /FSC/ – QSolar Limited (QSL – CNSX),(“QSolar” or the “Corporation”) is pleased to announce that after final development of the QSS solar module range of products and two months of intense internal lab testing utilizing most of TUV SUD testing protocols, it has shipped QSS250W solar modules to the independent TUV SUD laboratory in the United States to commence certification testing. The goal of the testing will be TUV SUD UL1703 certification, CSA UL Mark, including IFE CSA audit, fire test and CB report and certificate, and TUV SUD IEC61215 and IEC61730 certification. TUV SUD is an international service corporation focusing on consulting, testing, certification and training. At over 800 locations, primarily in Europe, North America, Asia Pacific, TÜV SÜD Group employs approximately 19,000 staff that work to validate the safety of products of all kinds to protect humans and the environment against hazards.
Completing the process of certification will assist QSolar in accessing many significant markets worldwide, including the United States and Canada. As a result of selling non-grid uncertified solar products to date, the Corporation anticipates validation of its products with enhanced sales opportunities and technical validation of the processes and technology. In addition, specific certification applications for markets that require their own certifications similar to Canada with CSA, such as Japan and Australia, can generally be applied for with little or no further testing procedures.
The Corporation currently manufactures solar photovoltaic (PV) panels in Shanghai, China using its proprietary trade secret Spraytek(r) and ESS process and its own QLite and QSS family designs. QSolar Spraytek(r) panels offer several advantages over competing products as they have significantly lower losses in hot climates due to their design, offer superior solar cell encapsulation for better protection, significant weight savings and durability features over existing competitors PV modules.
The Corporation has now completed development on a number of its other solar module range of products including its flexible and desert-ready solar modules. QSolar expects to submit these products immediately after obtaining successful certifications on the QSS250W products. QSolar expects to obtain results from TUV SUD during the first quarter of 2014.
At the request and under the supervision of TUV SUD (Jiangsu TUV Product Service Ltd., Shanghai Branch), QSolar has supplied two groups of QSS250W solar modules for testing. One group of solar modules has been manufactured with Taiwanese solar cells intended to be certified as TUV SUD UL 1703, CSA, CB and upon certification, to be manufactured and sold in the United States market. The second group of solar modules has been manufactured with Chinese solar cells intended to be certified as TUV SUD IEC61215 and IEC61730 and upon certification, to be manufactured and sold in the worldwide market, except the United States and those specific countries where additional specific certification might be required similar to TUV SUD UL 1703.
A contract was executed by the Corporation’s subsidiary, QSolar (Shanghai) Photovoltaic Technology Co. Ltd. with TUV SUD (Jiangsu TUV Product Service Ltd., Shanghai Branch) for the above testing certifications and an agreement as to the protocols and confirmation of testing procedures that would be undertaken and adaptable to QSolar’s proprietary substrate. All of QSolar’s range of solar module products are designed without a glass substrate. The elaborate and intensive testing processes that solar modules go through to obtain certification test and push the limits of endurance of any solar modules. Traditional glass solar modules have statistical failure rates of up to approximately 70% on three combined key test procedures for: high and low temperature cycles (-40 degrees C to +85 degrees C with 85% humidity) or thermal cycling test, humidity freezer test, and damp heat test.
In working through the certification process, the Corporation faced the challenge of dealing with both protocols and testing procedures designed for traditional glass solar modules. When dealing with a prior contract to obtain certification from TUV Rheinland (press released May 1, 2012 and December 12, 2012 press releases) QSolar experienced significant delays, disagreements and other issues, resulting in TUV Rheinland being unable to develop or execute testing setups needed to test QSolar’s unique trade secret light weight substrate and the Spraytek(r) technology. While QSolar understood that the technology difference between its solar modules compared to traditional glass solar modules represents a challenge for testing laboratories generally, the testing process with TUV Rheinland was terminated, with various unresolved matters still pending with TUV Rheinland. The terminated contract price balance has been refunded by TUV Rheinland.
