BROOKLYN, NY / myprgenie.com / ACCESSWIRE / April 2, 2014 / Dr. Michael Gabriel of Gabriel Pediatrics, a Staten Island pediatric care center, responds to an article published on March 28 by IOL Lifestyle, which talks about the correlation between stricter smoking laws and improved health for children and adults.
According to an article published on March 28th by IOL Lifestyle titled “Smoking ban good for child health,” a study performed by the Lancet Medical journal found that stricter tobacco laws reduced the number of premature births, as well as the number of kids diagnosed with asthma. The impact of strict tobacco laws varies around the world but the overall results are positive for everyone.
Jasper Been of the University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Population Health Sciences, who led the study, says that this change was seen a year after the implementation of stricter laws that banned smoking on public places. Data from around Europe and some parts of the US found that rates of both pre-term births and hospital attendance for asthma fell by 10 percent within a year of smoke-free laws coming into effect.
The Lancet Medical Journal study analyzed data on more than 2.5 million births and almost 250 000 hospital attendances for asthma attacks, acting as the first comprehensive study to look at how anti-smoking laws affect children’s health.
Dr. Michael Gabriel of Gabriel Pediatrics, a Staten Island pediatric care center, says that lawmakers should listen to concerned parents and adults. “While there are many things to worry about, the well-being of the people should be among the top priorities,” Gabriel explains. “Families do the best they can to protect their children from the harms and dangers of the outside world, implementing stricter on tobacco use would only benefit the people and the nation’s future.”
