The S&P/TSX composite index was up 63.22 points at 21,791.77.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 225.62 points at 38,128.91. The S&P 500 index was up 24.30 points at 5,042.69, while the Nasdaq composite was up 126.05 points at 15,731.53.

The Canadian dollar traded for 72.95 cents US compared with 72.68 cents US on Wednesday.

The June crude oil contract was down 47 cents at US$78.53 per barrel and the June natural gas contract was up nine cents at US$2.02 per mmBTU.

The June gold contract was up US$3.60 at US$2,314.60 an ounce and the July copper contract was down six cents at US$4.49 a pound.
