Quick overview of the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Platinum* Card
The TD® Aeroplan® Visa Platinum* Card is TD’s entry-level Aeroplan card, and it may appeal to those who are excluded from upper-tier Aeroplan cards due to restrictive income requirements and prohibitively high annual fees.
Who can benefit from the Aeroplan Platinum Visa from TD?
As a more entry-level option than TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card, the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Platinum* Card is a great option for those just beginning their travel rewards journey. If you're taking 1 to 2 flights per year and want to start accumulating travel rewards without a high annual fee commitment, this card offers a practical entry point to the Aeroplan program.
Others who can get impressive value from the card include:
- Budget-conscious Canadians: With its modest $89 annual fee, this card appeals to those who want travel rewards but are watching their wallet
- Applicants with limited income: The lack of a personal income requirement makes this card accessible to many Canadians who don't qualify for premium travel cards
- Credit-building travellers: If you have a good but not excellent credit score and want to build credit while earning travel rewards, this card offers a reasonable approval threshold while providing a pathway to qualify for premium travel cards in the future
- Families looking for a supplemental credit card: This can be an excellent secondary household card when paired with a premium travel card. One partner can hold the premium TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite while the other carries this card, allowing the household to maximize point earning while minimizing annual fees
Pros and cons
Pros
-
Lower annual fee: The Platinum Visa Card's annual fee more affordable than more premium Aeroplan cards like the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite while still providing access to the Aeroplan program
-
Basic travel insurance package: Includes travel medical insurance for trips, basic trip cancellation, and delayed/lost baggage coverage
-
No minimum redemption threshold: Ability to use Aeroplan points with no minimum point requirement for many redemptions
-
Star Alliance access: Aeroplan points can be used across 40+ airline partners, offering good flexibility for international travel
Cons
-
Foreign transaction fees: Charges the standard 2.5% fee on foreign currency transactions, making it less ideal for international purchases
-
No lounge access: Doesn't include airport lounge privileges that come with higher-tier travel cards
-
Modest everyday value: For cardholders who don't regularly fly Air Canada, the overall value proposition may be limited compared to a straightforward cash back card

How to earn Aeroplan points with the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Platinum
With the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Platinum* Card, you’ll earn 1 point† for every $1 spent on eligible gas, grocery and direct through Air Canada® purchases (including Air Canada Vacations®) made with your card. With all other purchases, you'll earn 1x.
Admittedly, on the surface the earn rate may not jump out as being spectacular. But you can earn points twice at participating Aeroplan retailers and the Aeroplan eStore. To do this, all you need to do is present your Aeroplan Membership number and then pay for your purchase with your TD® Aeroplan® Visa Platinum* Card.
How to redeem Aeroplan points
Aeroplan is one of the most popular travel rewards programs in Canada and is the official loyalty program of Air Canada. Since Air Canada is a member of Star Alliance, you can use your points on any of their partner airlines as long as you book your flights through the Aeroplan website or via their customer service line. Points are redeemed for flights based on demand and availability.
When you use your Aeroplan points to redeem a flight, many airlines still charge taxes, fees and surcharges which can add up to quite a bit.
Generally speaking, 1 Aeroplan point has an accepted value of $0.02 CAD per point. You can easily get that value when booking flights within North America and Asia. A one-way, short-haul flight will cost 7,500 Aeroplan points, so you could fly from Montreal to Newfoundland or Vancouver to Yukon. Alternatively, you could redeem 12,500 Aeroplan points for a one-way long-haul flight such as Toronto to Los Angeles, which has a value of about $300. Flying to Europe seems to be of low value when you consider how many points it requires and the additional fees you’ll need to pay.

Is it worth It?
Despite the drawbacks, the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Platinum* Card is still a good fit for people who want to collect Aeroplan points but don’t meet the minimum income requirement for some of the more lucrative cards. The sign-up bonus is worth more than the $89 annual fee, and the card is particularly valuable for those who frequently shop with Aeroplan partners.
